Shoot-Candid Portrait

The candid image is the opposite of the classic photograph that is precise and perfectly set up. Candid photographs are unplanned, spontaneous and show immediacy. Henri-Cartier Bresson could be called the King of the candid photograph and is known for capturing the "Decisive Moment", of everyday life. Arthur Fellig, known as Weegee, captured New York City street life and is known for his candid, gritty images.
For this assignment, you are to photograph one person, not to tell the story of their life, or who they are, but to capture the moment they are living in. This will be a challenge if you are trying to set up the image too much, so be prepared! Carry your camera with you and be ready for that spontanous moment. Remember to consider all the other things we have talked about, such as background, lighting, shutter/aperture and composition.
Keep up the good work, you are all becoming great photographers!
Image due: beginning of class, shoot at least 24 images, you will then narrow down your choices for us to see during class to 5! You will then have time to post them during class.

Shoot-Environmental Portrait

First let me just say, that you guys are doing a great job! You're blogs are looking very nice! Good work!
Our next two assignments are going to be portraits. Read chapter 5 for great tips, images, and direction. Expect a quiz on Thursday!
Here is what I'm looking for. A portrait of 1 person or group (if they belong together, ie: band). This is NOT a candid, we will do this next week. So, make sure you understand the difference. This portrait should show us something about the subject, what they are like, what they like, who they are, not just what they look like on the outside. Do your research, this will make it a more successful photograph.
Some tips, go with natural light, stay away from florescent lights, very bad, and direct flash not so great either. I find it is sometimes easier to work with people that you are comfortable with, so grab your best pal and go to the park, or sunset in downtown Boise... Shoot a variety, and until you get that perfect image.
Buena suerte!

Shoot-Sports

Sports and action shots are a whole genre in and of themselves. Read chapter 6, it contains a world of information about shooting sports. It will be quite impossible to get the close-up shots that the pros are getting with their 400mm lens. So, here are some tips that might help you when you are shooting. Go early or stay late at the game you are shooting. This will allow you more flexibility on the field/court. You can get closer and not interrupt the flow to the game. Watch the crowd, get their reaction and emotion to what is going on in the game. See if you can go to the locker room at halftime or after the game is over to capture the joy or sadness on the teams faces. Try panning if you don't have a fast enough shutter speed to capture the fast action that is popular. Check out a tripod so that you will be able to maximize the light you have. Find a spot and wait for the action to come to you.
I have a list of NNU sports happening this week, so we can sign up in class. You can shoot other action shots in the community if you wish, the Special Olympics are still going on this week.
Keep in mind that people either love shooting sports, or hate it. Give it your best shot and find out! Have fun, and good luck!

Due: Tues Feb. 17. - Post 3 images that show a variety of action and emotion

Shoot-General or Spot News

Buenas Dias!
Sorry that we didn't have class on Tues :-( I'm sure you all enjoyed a break. We are going ahead with the assignment to shoot General or Spot News. Read chapters 2 & 3 of your text (if you have not already) to give you a background and knowledge of what and how to shoot this. You can shoot events on campus or off campus. Some ideas: the Special Olympics opening ceremony is at the Idaho Center in Nampa this Sat. 2/7 from 2-5pm. You have access as a general fan and are allowed to photograph. It was too late for us to gain media access. There is also a blood drive on campus this Friday 2/6. Remember that the weather can make for great general news, be early to rise if there are foggy conditions or catch the sunset at Lake Lowell for a great view. Remember we have tripods for you to check out!
Images are due in class Tues. at 9:30. Do not post them yet, we will do some in-class reviewing and talking about which images are the strongest. Be sure to bring ALL your images from this shoot to class Tues. 2/10. See you tomorrow!
